Listen Out Artist Spotlight: SAFIA

By Steven Foster

There is no surprise that SAFIA will be performing at Listen Out festival this year. Listen Out is a four city festival taking place in Australia this fall. SAFIA is an electronica, indie pop band from Canberra, Australia. They first gained fame when they won the Groovin the Moo Festival Competition in 2012. Early in their career they were also featured on Peking Duk’s single “Take Me Over.” The song peaked at number 5 on Triple J Hottest 100 for 2014.

One could say that SAFIA has been extremely busy. The trio recently finished up opening for Twenty One Pilots on their New Zealand and Australia tour. They also released their debut album “Internal” late last year.

What makes SAFIA stand out is that AMAZING and such unique voice from lead singer Ben Woolner. I first discovered them through their song “Take Me Over” with Peking Duk. Then I saw them at Splendor in the Grass in 2015. Since then, I have been in love with their style of music. To me, it has that gothic sort of vibe to it yet uplifting so you can dance along. Here are three of my favorite songs that you have to check out from them:

“Embracing Me” What a tune! Where do I start? The song is an absolute belter with the perfect combination of passionate lyrics and strong vocals. It also peaked at number 23 on Triple J Hottest 100 in 2015.

“My Love is Gone” may be one of their newer songs but it is one I always find on repeat in my car. You can’t help but sing along to it!

Here is a taste of SAFIA live. “Counting Sheep” still does not give justice to how amazing and unique Woolner’s voice is. It always gives me goosebumps.
